Heyoung L. McBride, MD joined AOS in 2009 after serving as Assistant Professor at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, where her responsibilities included pediatric radiation oncology program development and support for sarcoma and breast programs, gynecological malignancies and inpatient leukemia/lymphoma patients. In addition, she conducted research in breast cancer genetics and treatment.
Prior to her tenure at the Moffitt Center, she worked in a hospital-based radiation oncology practice, where she started programs including prostate brachytherapy, HDR brachytherapy, and coronary vascular brachytherapy. With her partners, she started the stereotactic radiosurgery program for the hospital and operated several satellite radiation oncology facilities.
Dr. McBride earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and completed her residency in radiation oncology at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson. Prior to medical school, she completed her undergraduate studies and MS in Radiation Biophysics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Dr. McBride was one of two recipients of the first ASTRO research fellowship carried out at the Arizona Cancer Center on the topic of tumor cytogenetics and radiation therapy in melanoma. She has been an active participant in cancer treatment and research protocols and a frequent speaker to community and medical audiences. As well, she was a national medical delegate for the American Cancer Society Midwest Division and involved as a state and local leader for many years.
Dr. McBride is experienced in the use of TomoTherapy and Novalis treatment equipment, IMRT, IGRT, interstitial and intracavity brachytherapy, HDR, stereotactic radiosurgery, and MammoSite breast brachytherapy. At St.Joseph's Barrows Neurological Institute, her current areas of interest are brain tumors as well as breast, gynecologic and pediatric tumors and sarcomas. Dr. McBride is board certified in Radiation Oncology by the American Board of Radiology.
